SATURNALIA
It was party time today! Yes, 'was'. On December 17th, the Romans celebrated the festival Saturnalia in honour of the god Saturn and the end of the agricultural year. The first evidence of the party appears as early as the archaic period between 800 and 480 BC. People made offerings to Saturn, drank and ate a lot, gave each other presents and wore special hats. Boys were given time off from school and dice games were legal for a while. Even more remarkable: enslaved people and slave masters had to switch roles!
